Haripur (Staff Report) – According to statements made by a young girl from Gilgit, her husband Umair has been living and working in Dubai for the past several years at “McDermott Middle East Inc., New West Camp, SB 03.” She alleges that during this time, her in-laws subjected her to continuous torture, forcing her to work as a housemaid despite her husband’s absence.
She further claims that whenever her husband returned from Dubai, instead of supporting her, he also joined his family in pressuring her, particularly to excuse her “Haq Meher” and that she even suffered incidents of domestic violence.
The girl states that she kept all this hidden from her brothers and family members—despite them being very supportive—because she feared that divorce would bring heavy societal pressure.
She also alleges that Umair has already been married twice before, and that she was not informed of this fact. According to her, one of Umair’s previous wives had faced similar issues and had already filed a case against him in court.
Women’s rights activists, after learning of her situation, have strongly condemned these acts, demanding that Pakistan and UAE authorities take immediate and serious legal action against Umair to prevent further escalation. The girl’s brothers emphasize that they do not wish for any unlawful actions and are only seeking justice through legal means. Her case highlights the urgent need to protect women’s rights and ensure justice for victims of domestic violence.
