University of Swat: Addressing climate change, role of local government and youth

An awareness session titled “The Role of Local Governments and Youth in Climate Action” was held at the University of Swat, organized by Youth in Local Governance (YoLoGo), a joint initiative of the GIZ and the Forum of Federations. The panel included youth climate activist and University of Swat graduate Asif Javid, Green entrepreneur Ms. Zahra Kamal Khan, and Dr. Jan Muhammad, Deputy Director of Plant Protection at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Agriculture Extension Department. The session was moderated by Shahab Ud Din.

The speakers discussed the serious impacts of climate change on society and the local economy. Dr. Jan Muhammad highlighted various climate and agriculture initiatives by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and emphasized the importance of engaging local communities, especially youth by stating that their collaborating with government agencies is inevitable for climate change mitigation and adaptation. Ms. Zahra Kamal Khan urged simple, effective daily actions, such as reducing plastic use, reusing items, and recycling.

Mr. Asif Javid emphasized the need for practical steps over mere words, stating that real action is essential to tackle climate change and reduce its impacts.

In closing, Dr. Umar, Chairman Economics and Development Studies at the University of Swat, highlighted the valuable role of youth in combating climate change and mitigating its adverse effects. Ms. Abru Haider, representing the Forum of Federations, discussed the importance and role of local governments in this regard.
