Rain Continues in Islamabad; Heavy Snowfall in Hilly Areas

Islamabad and Rawalpindi, along with other parts of the country, are expected to experience intermittent rainfall on Friday evening and night. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a strong westerly wave is prevailing over most upper parts of the country and will continue for the next 24 hours.

Under these conditions, more intermittent rains and gusty winds are expected in the Twin Cities, upper Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Moderate to heavy rain and snowfall may occur in Kashmir. Meanwhile, cold and dry weather is likely in other regions of the country.

On Saturday and Sunday, mainly cold and dry weather is expected across most areas. However, freezing temperatures are likely in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and northern Balochistan.

Heavy rain or snowfall may lead to road closures and slippery conditions in Naran, Kaghan, Dir, Swat, Kalam, Chitral, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Shangla, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Murree, Galiyat, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Poonch, Haveli, and Rawalakot. Local streams and nullahs in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir may face flash flooding, while landslides and avalanches are possible in hilly areas. Tourists are advised to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.

Islamabad’s minimum temperature is expected between 2°C and 4°C on Saturday and between 1°C and 3°C on Sunday. Rawalpindi’s minimum temperature will likely remain between 5°C and 7°C on Saturday and 4°C to 6°C on Sunday.

During the last 24 hours, widespread rainfall and snowfall occurred across the country. In Kashmir, Muzaffarabad Airport recorded 64 mm and Rawalakot 19 mm rainfall. In Punjab, Islamabad city recorded 42 mm and Rawalpindi Chaklala 38 mm. Gilgit-Baltistan reported 26 mm in Astore.

Snowfall was significant in hilly areas: Malam Jabba 38 inches, Kalam 30 inches, Chitral 16 inches, and Murree 12 inches. Kalat was the coldest place in the country with a minimum of -12°C. Other low temperatures were recorded in Ziarat (-11°C), Quetta (-8°C), Parachinar (-7°C), Gupis (-5°C), Kalam and Malam Jabba (-4°C), and Leh (-3°C).
