KATHMANDU: Tourism authorities in Nepal announced on Wednesday that more than one thousand climbers successfully scaled Mount Everest this spring, establishing the current climbing window as the busiest season ever recorded on the world’s highest peak.

The unprecedented surge in successful ascents was primarily driven by a prolonged period of exceptionally stable weather, which provided expedition teams with an extended summit window. Himal Gautam, an official from Nepal’s tourism department, noted that while the initial tally indicates over a thousand climbers reached the 8,849-metre apex, final figures are undergoing official verification through photographic evidence and expedition statements. This milestone completely surpasses the previous record established in 2019, which saw 877 successful climbs.

The season began under intense strain when a massive serac,a block of unstable glacial ice, blocked the traditional path, sparking fears of critical delays. However, a coordinated effort by Nepali guides successfully charted an alternative route. Lakpa Sherpa of 8K Expeditions emphasized that teamwork, alongside modern technological assets like high-altitude internet access, drastically improved logistics and safety, keeping the overall fatality rate remarkably low despite the high volume of traffic.

The season witnessed multiple historical milestones, most notably by veteran Nepali guide Kami Rita Sherpa, who extended his own world record by completing his 32nd successful Everest summit. Due to China closing the northern Tibetan route this year, operations concentrated entirely on the southern side. Nepal issued a record-breaking 494 permits to foreign climbers, culminating in a single-day traffic peak on May 21, when an estimated 275 climbers were photographed standing in long queues amidst the icy ridges to reach the summit.
