As a passionate environmental scientist and educator from Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, I’m driven to mitigate human impact on our planet. Holding an M.Phil. in Environmental Sciences from Northern University Nowshera, I’ve witnessed Mardan’s devastating pollution firsthand. Once renowned as the ‘City of Smiles,’ its beauty and agriculture now suffer from contaminated waterways and garbage-filled landscapes.
Inspired by Fouzia Perveen, environmentalist and Aga Khan University lecturer, our collaborative journey began in February 2024. We conducted sessions in Peshawar, exploring climate change, carbon footprints and Islamic perspectives on environmental stewardship. Field visits to Chitral’s breathtaking Kalash Valley revealed alarming effects of human behavior: endangered markhor (Pakistan’s national animal), altered ecosystems and dwindling tourism.
Transformed by this experience, I adopted the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. In my household, waste is categorized into:
Organic waste (composted)
Plastic waste (recycled)
Valuable materials (sold or repurposed)
Guided by Islamic principles emphasizing conservation and responsible resource management, I educate students to combat climate change. Empowering future generations, we can reshape Pakistan’s environmental landscape. Teachers hold immense power to inspire positive change.
