Lahore: Police have issued a stern warning to citizens, cautioning that purchasing second-hand mobile phones from online platforms or unregistered sellers may lead to fraud, as recent data reveals a shocking number of people unknowingly used stolen devices over the past seven years.
According to records from the Punjab Police Mobile Tracking Unit, over 35,000 people in Lahore used stolen or snatched mobile phones between 2018 and 2025. During this period, authorities recovered more than 35,000 devices and initiated action against individuals found using them.
Police officials said the total value of recovered mobile phones exceeds Rs 87.5 million. In 2025 alone, more than 6,000 stolen or snatched devices were traced, with an estimated worth of over Rs 15 million. These figures underline the continuing rise of mobile phone theft and resale in the city.
Officials warned that buying second-hand phones online or from unregistered sellers carries a high risk of purchasing stolen devices. Such transactions may result in legal complications, financial loss, and confiscation of the phone. Citizens are advised to be particularly cautious when offered unusually cheap deals.
