MNAs’ Salaries Cut by 25% as National Assembly Joins Austerity Drive

In a move aimed at reducing government spending and conserving fuel, the National Assembly of Pakistan has announced a 25% cut in the salaries and allowances of all MNAs for the next two months as part of the national austerity campaign.

According to a notification, only 20% of the National Assembly Secretariat staff will work from the office, while the remaining 80% will work from home on a rotational basis.

Key measures announced include:
▪️ 25% salary cut for MNAs for two months
▪️ Four-day work week except when the assembly is in session
▪️ Senior officers (BPS-20 and above) to donate two days’ salary to the national exchequer
▪️ 70% reduction in electricity consumption in parliament offices
▪️ 70% of official vehicles grounded to reduce fuel usage
▪️ Foreign visits of parliamentary delegations suspended
▪️ Most meetings to be held virtually to save travel and fuel costs

Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said the steps reflect parliament’s commitment to support the government’s austerity campaign during the ongoing economic and regional challenges.

The decision comes after the government announced nationwide austerity measures due to the global fuel crisis triggered by the US-Israel war with Iran, which has disrupted energy supplies and increased oil prices worldwide.
