In a world where the ascent of great powers is often marked by conflict and conquest, China’s rise stands as a remarkable exception. Over the past few decades, China has transformed into an economic and technological powerhouse without resorting to military aggression. Its unique path of “Peaceful development” offers valuable lessons for nations like Pakistan, which seek economic prosperity and regional stability in an increasingly complex global landscape. As China’s closest partner in South Asia, Pakistan can not only benefit from this relationship but also to learn from China’s approach to growth, peace and diplomacy.

China’s extraordinary rise from an agrarian society to the second largest economy in the world is nothing short of awe-inspiring. With a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) exceeding $17.9 trillion in 2023 and a per capita income of over $12,000, China has pulled millions of its citizens out of poverty and established itself as a global leader in innovation, technology and infrastructure. This economic miracle was achieved without the bloody wars or colonization that have historically accompanied the emergence of major powers. China’s ascent is a testament to the power of diplomacy, strategic planning and above all a commitment to peace.

What sets China apart from previous rising powers is its steadfast avoidance of military aggression. In contrast to the colonization and wars waged by empires, China has remained focused on building strong economic and diplomatic relationships. The government’s official policy often referred to as “Peaceful Development” reflects a deliberate choice to prioritize regional and global stability over military dominance.

Under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, China has expanded its influence through initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Which promotes infrastructure development and trade across Asia, Europe and Africa. This approach has allowed China to build alliances and foster cooperation without the need for conflict.

The Chinese government has repeatedly asserted that it does not seek global hegemony. Instead, China’s focus remains on creating a “moderately prosperous society” at home while contributing to global peace and stability. As the world watches China’s peaceful rise continues to challenge the traditional notion that great powers must exert their influence through force.

For Pakistan, China’s rise is not just a geological curiosity, it is a guiding example of how a nation can climb the ladder of development while maintaining peaceful relations with its neighbors. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) a flagship project under the Belt and Road Initiative is perhaps the most significant symbol of this partnership. Through CPEC, China has invested billions of dollars in Pakistan’s infrastructure, energy and transportation sectors, laying the groundwork for economic rejuvenation.

China’s support has been instrumental in alleviating some Pakistan’s most pressing challenges. Projects like the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant and Gwadar Port have not only addressed Pakistan’s energy needs but also boosted its strategic importance on the global stage. In 2024, the two countries celebrated 73 years of diplomatic relations, underscoring the depth of their partnership.

This collaboration has benefited both nations, but also provides a roadmap for Pakistan to adopt China’s strategies for its own development. With China’s guidance, Pakistan can unlock new economic potential, modernize its infrastructure and strengthen its position in the global economy.

China’s rise clearly proves that economic success and global influence do not require annexation. Instead, they demand vision, strategic planning, and a commitment to peace. For Pakistan, the time is ripe to draw inspiration from its eastern neighbor and create a future built on collaboration, growth, and stability.
