Pakistan’s security forces took firm and decisive action on Sunday after Afghan forces opened unprovoked fire on multiple Pakistani border posts along the western frontier. According to official sources, the attacks were launched from across the border late Saturday night in areas including Kurram, Bajaur, and Chitral, targeting Pakistani check posts without any provocation.
The Pakistan Army responded immediately with precise retaliatory fire, targeting the Afghan positions involved in the aggression. Several posts used to fire on Pakistani troops were destroyed. The operation was carried out strictly in self-defence and aimed at protecting Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In view of the escalation, border crossings at Torkham, Chaman, and other points were temporarily closed to ensure security and prevent further infiltration attempts. The Foreign Office strongly condemned the incident, calling it a violation of international norms and good-neighbourly relations. Pakistan has also lodged a formal protest with the Afghan authorities through diplomatic channels.
According to the Foreign Office statement, Pakistan has repeatedly warned the interim Afghan administration about the continued presence of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other terrorist elements operating from Afghan soil. These groups have been involved in a series of attacks inside Pakistan, causing the loss of innocent lives and targeting law-enforcement personnel.
The statement further added that Afghanistan’s failure to act against these militants has created serious security challenges for Pakistan. Sunday’s unprovoked aggression is seen as an attempt to divert attention from the issue of cross-border terrorism emanating from Afghanistan.
Pakistan reaffirmed that it desires peaceful and cooperative relations with all its neighbours, but no compromise will ever be made on national security. “Our forces are fully capable of defending every inch of Pakistan’s territory,” a security official said, adding that any act of hostility from across the border will be met with a strong and proportionate response.
The situation along the border has now been brought under control, while security forces remain on high alert to prevent further violations. Trade and civilian movement through the affected crossings will be restored once the security situation stabilizes.
Pakistan has called on the Afghan authorities to fulfil their responsibilities under international law and prevent the use of Afghan territory by militants against Pakistan. Islamabad reiterated that lasting peace in the region can only be achieved when Kabul takes concrete action against the TTP and other terrorist networks operating within its borders.
The Government of Pakistan remains committed to maintaining peace, but it has made it clear that any attempt to challenge Pakistan’s sovereignty will receive a decisive and immediate response.
