Pakistan Signals Support to Saudi Arabia Amid Rising Gulf Tensions

Islamabad has signaled its support to Saudi Arabia while maintaining caution with Iran, following Iranian drone and missile strikes on the Kingdom. Military consultations between Pakistan’s top leadership and Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman highlighted the delicate balance Islamabad seeks to maintain amid the escalating Gulf crisis.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement after the meeting noted the gravity of the attacks on Saudi territory and discussed measures under the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement (SMDA). While reaffirming solidarity with Riyadh, Pakistan’s statement carefully called for restraint, referring to Iran as a “brotherly country,” reflecting Islamabad’s longstanding policy of avoiding entanglement in regional rivalries that could affect its own security.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed that Pakistan communicated with Tehran, reminding it of the SMDA and urging caution. The approach underscores Pakistan’s dual objectives: to reassure Saudi Arabia of its defence partnership while encouraging de-escalation with Iran.

As the confrontation spreads beyond its original scope, Pakistan continues to rely on diplomacy and security consultations rather than direct military engagement. Islamabad’s messaging signals engagement, caution, and a preference for political resolution, keeping channels open with both Riyadh and Tehran, while monitoring developments in a region increasingly under pressure from broader geopolitical dynamics.
