HEC Introduces Seerah Education as a Compulsory Part of University Curriculum

HEC Introduces Seerah Education as a Compulsory Part of University Curriculum

Usman Ayub blogger ibcenglish

Nearly two years have passed since the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan made it mandatory for all undergraduate students in Pakistani universities to study the Seerah (biography) of the Prophet Muhammad . This significant step aimed to reconnect young minds with the life, character, and teachings of the Prophet . However, despite the policy’s noble intent, a standardized, academic-quality textbook remained absent—until now.

Filling this critical gap, the book “مطالعہ سیرتِ طیبہ تاریخی ترتیب سے” (Study of the Blessed Seerah in Historical Order) has emerged as a structured and scholarly resource that can be effectively used across universities. This book has been designed with the framework of a typical university semester in mind. With 32 well-organized lessons, each spanning 10–12 pages, it seamlessly aligns with a two-credit-hour course structure. Moreover, every chapter ends with reflective questions to encourage critical thinking and deeper engagement with the Prophet’s life.

What sets this book apart is its comprehensive yet accessible format. The first lesson provides a compact and insightful overview of the discipline of Seerah and emphasizes its relevance in contemporary times. The second lesson masterfully discusses the miraculous aspects of the Prophet’s life, helping students appreciate his unique status and divine mission. Remarkably, the final chapter includes a detailed discussion on Shama’il—the personal characteristics, manners, and appearance of the Prophet —an area often overlooked in academic settings, yet deeply inspirational and spiritually enriching.

Between these opening and closing chapters lies a chronological account of key events from both the Makkan and Madinan phases of the Prophet’s life. Long events are thoughtfully divided into sub-sections with headings, allowing readers to digest and retain historical details more effectively.

The book is authored by Dr. Syed Aziz ur Rahman, a leading Seerah scholar in Pakistan. With decades of experience in research, curriculum development, and teacher training, Dr. Rahman’s name alone lends credibility to the project. His expertise ensures the book is not only academically sound but also spiritually resonant.

As many universities in Pakistan operate in English-medium instruction, there is a growing call for an official English translation of the book. This would enable a wider audience of students to benefit from this important work, regardless of their language background.

Beyond classrooms, the book holds equal value for general readers who wish to explore the life of the Prophet in a structured, thoughtful, and engaging manner.
