Islamabad – The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) stated on Monday that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif assured its leadership of addressing concerns over controversial canal projects during a meeting at the Prime Minister’s House. The meeting, held during an Iftar dinner, aimed to ease tensions between the ruling coalition allies.

A PPP press release claimed PM Shehbaz pledged to resolve issues related to the canals, improve law and order in Kurram district, and assist flood victims in Balochistan. However, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) press release did not mention the canal assurances, highlighting ongoing discord.

Key Points

The PPP has opposed canal projects in Punjab’s Cholistan area, fearing reduced water supply to Sindh and damage to farmland.

PPP leaders also raised concerns about Kurram’s law and order and insufficient flood relief in Balochistan.

PM Shehbaz praised the PPP’s role in the coalition and called for unity to address national challenges.

The PMO’s statement emphasized the PPP’s confidence in the government and its support for economic stability.

Background

Tensions between the PPP and PML-N-led federal government have grown over unmet commitments and unilateral decisions. Despite a December 2024 meeting between PM Shehbaz and President Asif Zardari, disputes persist. President Zardari recently criticized the government’s “unilateral” approach in parliament and urged halting the canal project.

Outlook

While the meeting signals an attempt to ease tensions, the differing narratives in the press releases suggest unresolved issues. The coalition’s stability hinges on addressing the PPP’s concerns, particularly regarding inter-provincial water disputes.
