Talking about anything during the current battle with the yet again novel strain of corona-virus seems meaningless, especially, when not discussing the virus itself or its implications after witnessing such ruthless outcomes of its brutal attacks. But, anyhow let us give a try of briefly discussing something without thinking about anything which is related with corona-virus. So, let’s begin. Sometimes, in order to solve a problem, taking too many initiatives, in the wrong direction is the very impediment, in solving that problem, instead of not taking any. A policy designed, no matter how intricately, or, efficiently would be of no use if it does not address the core issues, mainly, responsible for the existence of the problem itself. Doing something without gaining anything is just like dieting and it hurts so much when you are at the receiving end.
The whole fabric of society is composed of various interconnected systems, the most crucial among them, is that of education. If the ills inflicted on this system are addressed properly, then every other segment of the society will fall in line and follow suit. Our education system is deeply flawed, and, is of a very poor quality. We can think of many plausible reasons responsible for it. But, what are we doing in order to resolve this issue? Possibly, quite a few things. but, are they the required steps necessary, to get rid of this ailment. well, nobody knows for sure. It is logical, to draw this conclusion that any system that is built, without, keeping in view, the basic human psyche is bound to fail ultimately.
The Core issues our education system suffers from are many, including, little or no access to education, or, high dropout ratio, among others. But, for the moment, focusing on the problem, which is the inability of the students to actually learn anything, their dis-engaged attitude in our educational institutions. This can be caused by many factors, including, standardized testing system of students, memorizing and cramming someone else’s ideas. The main cause of this mal-functioning of our educational institutes, are the very backbone of it i.e the teachers. It would be a very acceptable proposition, that no educational institute can be bigger than its teachers. They, are its life-blood. Most teachers are either incapable, or lazy, or not performing their function of mentoring the students, stimulating and provoking the process of learning. They should be hired while keeping in view the role which they ought to play in the making or breaking of the thought process of society. They should be given handsome salary packages and should not suffer at the merciless hands of too many financial constraints in their personal lives, so that they do not make teaching a mere money-making business. They should be part of many development projects and workshops, aimed to enhance their teaching skills.
Also, they should be encouraged to play a more pro-active role in the policy-making of education system, while, imparting education to students, either through some traditional method, or, even by employing some modern techniques. The policymakers, while devising the policies have not kept in mind. the very human nature. The process of human development depends upon many psychological factors, which, if left out of consideration, would lead to an utter failure in making any system. Firstly, humans are naturally diverse, they are distinct from each other. But, our education system is based on a system of conformity. Secondly, human beings are naturally curious, especially children are natural learners. But our culture of testing replaces curiosity with compliance. Thirdly, human beings are inherently creative, different from each other. They, create and recreate, and grow, as a consequence. Instead, we have a system of standardization. Education is not a mechanical system but a human system.
The feeble ideas which arise in the stunted minds of the suspected legislators, does not even take into consideration, the human element in the equation, when they try to formulate policies for the general population which is, allegedly, composed of human beings. The age-old methods of keeping people grounded and intellectually bankrupt, burdened with the extra weight of their gross negligence, should go no further than this. Rather, constructive strategies should be opted in order to make this whole exercise productive and fruitful. The seeds of possibilities are lying underneath the surface of despair, being dormant not dead, it just needs the right atmosphere, to get out of the clutches of defeat and emerge victorious. Nothing, but ‘hope’ is left in our tanks out of which we will make a better future for ourselves and generations to come.
