A personal view on the Novel.
“The Kite Runner” is a marvelous tale that explores the nature of redemption, friendship, and guilt. Amir, who is the protagonist of this novel, is desperate to catch the attention of his father. He wins the kite flying tournament and achieves what he wants at last. But he commits the worst mistake of his life because he doesn’t take any action when he sees his friend Hassan getting raped by Assef and two other boys. It doesn’t come to an end here. He suffers from his guilt throughout the course of 15-20 years and at last his guilt compels him to redeem all his sins. Therefore he does so and atones his unatoned sins.
The critics say about this novel that, it is a misrepresentation of Pashtuns. But with due respect, I disagree with this. Though Husseini exaggerates the matter what he says is not totally wrong.
I have taken some ideas from the book…
The first thing he criticizes the most is this, that the Pashtoon is racist. He says in our society people are seen through the spectacles of race. And this, I think is the worst thing about us. We judge people on the basis of their race. They say Mister Tom and herry are from a good family. Like, seriously? What is this good family stuff? Well, I am unable to understand this.
When it comes to religion then we judge people on the basis of their act. You will be respected only when u are (Sunni and Deobandi). People of one sect do not respect the people of another sect. This is the sign of an uncivilized nation. I believe, that until and unless we leave these labels, peace will be a word unknown to us.
The second point I noticed from the story of a character named “Rahim Khan”. We Pashtuns do not give importance to women in terms of deciding their future. In our society, a girl can not get equal education as boys. They can’t choose their life partner on their own. This is the double standards of our society that sons can choose whatever they want in their life. But when it comes to daughters, then comes the so-called honor (nang o names) in their parents.
The third claim of Husseini is this, that Pashtoon make use of clichés such as
(Like father and like a brother) He refers to these words as clichés when we say you are dear to me as my brother or I respect you as my father. He says Pashtoons are not that good. They are snakes in the grass. They betray those people who sacrifice themselves for them. And this is the very worst thing. It is difficult to bear such comments but I think it is reality.
At a point, Khalid Husseini says that look, robots of other nations Have reached to mars and they have put their flags on the moon, and we? We are busy listening and telling jokes about Mullah Nasruddin. That’s too harsh to listen but it is a ground reality. We are zero in education and technology. We should take this criticism positively and we have to improve ourselves educationally as well as technologically.
We should educate our young generation to protect themselves from such evils.
All human beings should be respected. Because when u talk to someone politely and you respect someone, it’s actually respecting your own self. The first thing is ethics and etiquette then comes to education.
