Beyond the broad social responsibilities that any citizen has, the principal social responsibilities of media person hold at a higher rate for the reason that they are seen to have the public’s trust. Holding power to Shape perceptions and building mindsets toward issues that really matters to masses, keeping the fact in mind that journalists can be performed the instrumental role to approach sustainable development goals. So what are the strategies and approached could possibly be used to earn pathway towards achieving global development goals for humanity. This is the core essence of 11th journalist seminar for the journalist from Asia and Europe to exchange ideas, good practices, and challenges they face in reporting on sustainable development organized by Asia-Europe Foundation ASEF. A journalist who has immense power being catalyst and advocate the society, engaged to address the broader themes of sustainable development issues and engaged in a thoughtful process to lean that how media can cooperate with each of these sectors to enhance awareness and action on the achievement of the #SDGs. The 11th ASEF Journalists’ Seminar (ASEFJS11) is a continuation of the ASEF Journalists’ Colloquium series. It was organized from 17-22 November 2017, in conjunction with the 13th ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (ASEM FMM13) in Naypyidaw, Myanmar.
The role of the media since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals #SDG reflected the essence of the development changes that we want to see and embrace around the globe. When consensus was reached on the 17 goals and 169 targets it was done in 2016 so on the principles of multi-stakeholder engagement and collective implementation. A consent, therefore, that everyone had a role to play and no one would be left behind.
In order to prove their due role, Media as an instrument, a socially responsible journalist can be a real change agent beyond just reporter! With consolidated strategy and collective effort, constructive journalism reinforces the SDG agenda. Through pitching more and more development stories, performing a role as an educator, today’s e media can support deeper understanding of sustainable development initiative at grass root to higher policy-making level.
What we know or do not know determines our response to it, what is reported and how it is reported goes some way in shaping the policy and State action agenda and has implications for the millions of people whose lives are exaggerated. As an evolving society, we reinforced and acknowledged the importance of the mass media as key drivers for the spread of information. There is not much information available or any assessment that that gives insight into how the media has fared in reporting on the SDGs since its adoption in 2016. This can only happen when the potential of a genuine concern by the media in the global development agenda ensured.
The question that how media telling the same stories that somehow seem very distant from our lived realities needs to be addressed. Investigative journalism of an incredibly high standard particularly reported the response, rather, has been an even greater crack-down on independent journalism targeting the safety of journalists. On the other hand, the financial sustainability of news media is a big question and therefore the financial security and working conditions of journalists are considerable obstacles for constrictive journalism.
The most imperative challenges to media freedom and free expression is the financial sustainability and independence that actually faces by media is the single greatest challenge to democracy that leads development, with global trends related to the collapse of conventional journalistic business models being provoked in the region by weak advertising markets and the undue influence of media outlets captured by political elites in Pakistan.
The consequence of these commercial pressures is to leave media organizations, especially smaller community media, exposed to undue political and economic influences and limits their capacity to work independently in the public interest that leads towards real-life development issue. High-quality public service and public service journalism, in particular, should be supported as public goods. Public interest journalism involves media content that provides citizens with access to information on key aspects of public life significantly affecting their well-being and involvement.
Its suppose that social development organizations are key holders or custodian of development agenda of course for obvious reasons as their vision manly to address their development issues , they have the mandate so as media as a catalyst of society, there is a dire need on both ways to coordinate, cooperate, get connected and take collective efforts. There is a fine between a working relationship with NGOs (Social development sector) and media whether it’s working for them or working to them.
To follow the constrictive journalism towards pursuing development agenda to the masses, media industry needs to follow a consolidate strategy and collective effort. In this regard the role of the media organization is crucial, editorial policies are very relevant and matter the most. Sensitization and capacity building of journalist is essential. The different sort of capacity building process enable journalists to influence key decision-makers in politics, parliaments, and government through effective reporting on the SDGs, awareness raising on the barriers and catalysts affecting the SDGs; increasing the knowledge base on which key factors to follow when reporting on SDGs and to develop a holistic understanding of SDGs from the viewpoints of policymakers, multilateral organizations, aid agencies and local citizens. 17 development goals #SDG that can transform the world, would highly be needed to be addressed.
It is imperative for a journalist to cultivate the craft of how to explore development stories on multiple aspects, continuing to follow up until some constrictive result or reaction emerged. How to make encompassing newsroom and editorial in-charge, concerning editor to give more time and space of development issues and creating reports that belong to the community.
Commercialized, agenda setters and corporate culture flag barrier of which most of giant media entities followed by, now it is the time to resume pro-people approach as primary job of media. This is the rightist juncture to follow the long way ahead meant for media in Pakistan moving from reactive to proactive journalism.
