MOHALI (Web Desk) – New Zealand defeated Pakistan by 22 runs in the Group 2 match of the ICC World T20 2016 played at Mohali on Tuesday.
New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and opted to bat first against Pakistan, led by Shahid Afridi.
New Zealand openers started the first innings all guns blazing and that aggressive attitude was the highlight of their entire innings as the Kiwi batsmen did not missed a single opportunity to thrash the Pakistani bowlers. Martin Guptill scored 80 runs off 48 balls. Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Sami picked two wickets each for Pakistan. The Kiwis set a total of 181 for Pakistan after finishing their innings at 180/5.
The score of 181 runs proved to be too much for Pakistan as the Men in Green finished their innings at 158/5. After a promising start from Sharjeel Khan who scored 47 runs off 26 balls, rest of the batting line-up failed to deliver as the Kiwi spinners slowed things down to a great extent for Pakistan and they were unable to rotate strike between the wickets. Skipper Afridi was unable to perform yet again as he scored only 19 off 11 deliveries. Santner and Milne picked two wickets for the Kiwis as they comfortably beat Pakistan by 22 runs and made their way into the semi-finals.
No Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Hafeez in the Pakistani line-up for this match. Both players have been replaced by Khalid Latif and Imad Wasim.
