Islamabad March 20, 2016: A PPP rally in front of the national press club in Islamabad Sunday evening condemned the government for allowing Musharraf to go travel abroad while a high treason case and other cases were pending in the courts.
The rally was organized by Nargis Faiz Malik and other office bearers of the women wing of the Islamabad chapter of the party.
Addressing the rally Senator Farhatullah Babar demanded that the government come out clean on whether Musharraf’s sudden departure was the result of pressure from undisclosed quarters or some deal.
Until we know the truth behind the mystery we will not be able to stop dictators from subverting the Constitution and also getting away with it mocking the nation, the Constitution and the law.
The political message underlying his exit from the country is that there are two sets of laws one for the ordinary people and the other for the strong and powerful. the stark message is that a dictator even while facing formal treason charges in a competent court of law can get away unpunished and untried.
This is most disturbing as it will only encourage potential dictators from subverting the Constitution in the future, he said.
He said that in terms of mystery and grave consequences Musharraf’s exit was akin to the mysterious discovery of OBL in Abbottabad in May 2011.
He said Musharraf had not spent even a few hours in lock up, not a night in prison let alone being sentenced and convicted.
The military dictator surprised his friends and foes alike when he without permission of the court went to hospital under official escort and was mysteriously protected from prosecution and trial.
The way a former military dictator was facilitated to flee the country calls for a candid discussion and debate in the Parliament on the how and why of it.
Musharrf has mocked not only at the government but also on the parliament and indeed all political forces.
Reportedly he enjoyed music in the plane and on arrival in Dubai he not only cancelled his medical appointment but also presided over a political meeting. By doing so Musharraf not only mocked at the Constitution and the law but also embarrassed his perceived benefactors and defenders, he said.
Musharraf says he will return and the government claims that cases will continue but he has not given any written undertaking to return to the country.
He said that Supreme Court has said that it has nothing to do with Musharraf being on the exit list and the government should decide on its own but the government claims that it has acted on the court orders.
He said that all prisons and lock ups are for civilian rulers and politicians and not for the “holy cows.”
